Black Belt Quilt Mural Trail

HISTORY

Since 2012, community meetings have been held across the Black Belt Region by Black Belt Treasures Cultural Arts Center (BBTCAC) to discuss the creation of the Black Belt Quilt Mural Trail – Alabama’s first quilt trail. The Black Belt Quilt Mural Trail was designed to highlight this singular region of our state, explore the history and technique of the quilting art form in the Black Belt, and boost downtown revenues and tourism in the region.

Support from Alabama’s Black Belt Heritage Area, Alabama Department of Tourism, Alabama State Council on the Arts, The University of Alabama’s Center for Economic Development, Auburn University Economic & Community Development Institute, Black Belt Community Foundation, South Arts, and The Daniel Foundation of Alabama - along with the support of individual cities and towns, counties, business, and volunteers - has made the trail possible.

The Black Belt Quilt Mural Trail will eventually include sites in all nineteen counties served by BBTCAC and will offer educational opportunities for tourists to visit and learn about local historical quilting sites, meet current quilting guilds, and learn stories of local organizations. Communities, organizations, businesses and individuals share their stories through quilt murals displayed for public view. This trail aids in spreading awareness of the wonders the Black Belt region has to offer while attracting business to local areas of interest. The trail also encourages tourists to stay overnight, eat in local restaurants, and shop in local stores.
