Just Call Me A Fiber Artist

by | | 0 comment(s)

This Gee’s Bend artist is not a quilter like many of the residents living there. She is a fiber artist who creates her art using small pieces of fabric to form patterns. The artist is Cynthia M. Pettway (Wilcox Cty.).

When did you start creating fiber art?

“Five years ago. I was inspired by Mary Ann Pettway. I watched her as she created her work of art, and later she showed me how she worked her magic.”

What attracted you to fiber art versus quilting?

"I tried quilting, but it was causing pain in my shoulders and fingers. The fiber art was easier for me to physically do."

Describe to me your process when creating a piece?

“I work at my home during the evening hours after work. I often continue into the early morning hours.  I start cutting, then sewing, and a finished product is produced.”

What materials do you use and where do you obtain them?

“I use a variety of fabrics, mostly cotton, poly-cotton and denim. Some is donated to me and others are purchased. I am fortunate enough to find some through my thrifting excursions.”

How long does it take you to complete an item?

“It usually takes 4-5 hours depending on the design.”

How do you get your ideas for your art?

“All of my designs are originals and come from my thoughts. I believe in a higher power (God). He gives me an image and I use my rotary cutter as a guide.”

What do you find most enjoyable about your craft?

“I think the finished product is the most rewarding. It gives me a sense of serenity and relaxation.”

Cynthia Pettway’s fiber art is available for purchase at BBTCAC and at the web site http://blackbelttreasures.com.
