Wood
Turnings
Rodger Carroll was first introduced to the art of wood turning by
his carpentry teacher in high school. Rodger continued his education at Auburn
University with a degree in Trade and Industrial Education. He used magazine
articles and instructional materials to further develop his skills on the
lathe. As a member of the Alabama Baptist Disaster Relief Organization, Rodger
gives all revenues from the sale of his items to mission trips that focus on
disaster relief and building projects.
After Hurricane Ivan,
Rodger began in earnest to create his artwork. Using salvaged wood from the
storm, he outlines the shape of an item with a chain saw before moving on to
his fifty-year-old lathe. Rodger enjoys the challenge of the slow, steady,
hard-to-use machine. Using woods such as cedar, pecan, and walnut, Rodger
creates bowls, vases, and other decorative items that he finishes with a high
gloss lacquer.
